Naming Synergy Blocking Attitudes

March 8, 2010 by davissm · 2 Comments

We often tend to get in our own way when it comes to collaborating and building synergy with others. The term synergy, by the way refers to the possibility of a group being far more creative and effective than the sum of individuals that make it up. Many of the assumptions, attitudes, and habits that block synergy from happening naturally are learned one way or another. Wouldn’t it be great if we could clearly name these blocks? This is exactly what I attempt to do in this week’s article, Naming Synergy Blocking Attitudes. Note that these behaviors apply to facilitators and participants alike. Let me know what you think by following the comments link at the end of the article.

  1. John Lesko says:

… A most interesting perspective re: “naming synergy blocking attitutes” although I could have done w/out the flatulence analogy (which was funny but didn’t go over well for sometimes ones thoughts released openly are more like a rose).

… The inference to a journey was also helpful. Facilitators do need to be fearless trailblazers at times. I totally agree that the view changes from a group’s new perspective when they just move on.

… And as for finding one’s muse in the desert or after a time of reflection, ‘yes’ I do think you’re onto something here too. Sometimes synergy results from a group socializing together and getting away from the task at hand. Other times synergy occurs when members of a group break away and then re-unite. The image that comes to mind is the ‘eaglette’ who is pushed form the nest and then learns to soar.

Keep up the FACILITATOR U newsletter and blog. I read every article and enjoy your sharing such ideas and practices.

PS: I logged into the blog w/ my ‘other e-mail / website’ — There’s an entirely different set of Synergy Blockers to list when working in an all volunteer organization such as Toastmasters.

  2. I am getting the message from multiple venues this week about “self-importance” and letting go of it. Carolyn Myss, Castenada and others.

Curiosity is a wonderful replacement – Open to what is around me, what life is offering to me, what wisdom the universe is bringing to me.

Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions – now just don’t let that blow up your self-importance!!
